Shell intends to build six additional LNG carriers, increasing the number of its ordered ships to 24. Expanding the fleet with newbuilds, the company concluded agreements with Knutsen LNG, Pan Ocean and investors advised by J.P. Morgan Asset Management. Information was shared by Splash247.
Delivery from South Korean Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries is scheduled for 2023.
Global head of Shell Shipping & Maritime Grahaeme Henderson stated: “These ships will be some 35% more efficient than required by the energy efficiency design index (EEDI) and 20% more than required by the annual efficiency ratio (AER), delivering significant emission reductions for our time charter fleet”.
Shell representatives noted, that all these vessels will be equipped with dual-fuel X-DF engines, air lubrication systems and shaft generators for auxiliary power, boil-off management plants as well as optimised hull and design speed.
It should be noted, at the same time, Shell confirmed that about 120 people linked to a Covid-19 outbreak at its Shearwater production hub. 15 people tested positive for a Covid and 70 had close contacts.
