LR Grants First Certification for 100% Hydrogen-Fueled Marine Propulsion
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded BeHydro the first Type Approval Certificate for a fully hydrogen-fueled, spark-ignited marine engine, marking a milestone in zero-emission vessel propulsion.
The certification confirms that the BeHydro hydrogen engine design complies with LR’s stringent safety and performance standards, validating its readiness for commercial maritime applications.
This approval enables shipowners and operators to integrate hydrogen-powered engines into newbuilds and retrofit projects, supporting the industry’s transition toward decarbonized operations.
BeHydro, a collaboration between ABC Engines and CMB.TECH, continues to advance hydrogen technology, offering scalable solutions for vessels ranging from inland waterway craft to deep-sea tonnage.
With regulatory backing now in place, the maritime sector gains a critical pathway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining operational reliability.
