Boskalis Unveils Windpiper: The New Benchmark in Subsea Rock Installation

Boskalis Launches Industry-Leading Subsea Rock Installation Vessel

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. has officially commissioned the Windpiper, now recognized as the world’s largest subsea rock installation (SRI) vessel following an intensive 18-month conversion program.

The 227-meter-long, 40-meter-wide vessel was formally named on July 3 in a ceremony led by the vessel’s sponsor. The Windpiper represents a significant advancement in subsea rock placement capabilities, engineered to support offshore energy infrastructure projects with enhanced precision and efficiency.

Key Capabilities and Operational Advantages

  • Designed for large-scale subsea rock installation, cable protection, and pipeline stabilization in challenging offshore environments.
  • Equipped with state-of-the-art dynamic positioning (DP3) and advanced rock handling systems to ensure operational accuracy in deep and ultra-deep waters.
  • Optimized for renewable energy sector demands, including offshore wind farm development and subsea cable protection.
  • Enhanced deck space and payload capacity to accommodate high-volume rock installation projects with reduced transit times.

Strategic Investment in Offshore Infrastructure

The conversion of the Windpiper underscores Boskalis’ commitment to expanding its fleet of specialized vessels to meet the growing demands of the global offshore energy market. The vessel is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting both traditional oil and gas projects and the accelerating transition toward sustainable energy solutions.

With its increased operational range and technical sophistication, the Windpiper sets a new standard for subsea rock installation, reinforcing Boskalis’ position as a leader in marine contracting and offshore services.
