Strategic Investment Aims to Modernize Inland and Coastal Freight Operations
Cooperative Ventures, the joint enterprise of CHS Inc. and GROWMARK, has finalized an investment in OpenTug, a technology firm developing AI-driven solutions for inland and coastal marine logistics.
The move aligns with Cooperative Ventures’ mission to strengthen supply-chain resilience for agricultural commodities. OpenTug’s platform leverages real-time data analytics and predictive modeling to optimize tug-and-barge scheduling, reduce transit delays, and improve cargo-handling accuracy across river systems and short-sea routes.
Key Benefits for Agri-Bulk Operators
- Route Optimization: AI algorithms dynamically adjust vessel paths based on water levels, lock congestion, and weather forecasts, cutting fuel consumption and transit times.
- Load Planning: Automated stowage calculations maximize barge capacity while maintaining stability, reducing demurrage and improving turnaround at terminals.
- Compliance Tracking: Integrated regulatory modules ensure adherence to USCG, EPA, and local waterway regulations, streamlining documentation and inspections.
- Fleet Visibility: Cloud-based dashboards provide 24/7 monitoring of vessel location, engine performance, and cargo status, enabling proactive maintenance and incident response.
OpenTug’s technology targets the unique challenges of agri-bulk transport, where seasonal harvests and fluctuating waterway conditions demand adaptive logistics. The investment will accelerate deployment of the platform across Cooperative Ventures’ network of grain elevators, river terminals, and export facilities.
“This partnership bridges the gap between traditional maritime operations and next-generation digital tools,” said a Cooperative Ventures spokesperson. “By integrating OpenTug’s AI capabilities, we’re positioning our members to compete more effectively in a tightening freight market.”
OpenTug, founded in 2021, has already onboarded regional carriers and port authorities in the Mississippi River basin. The company plans to expand its coverage to the Great Lakes and Gulf Coast corridors in 2025.
