Collaborative Initiative Explores Nuclear Propulsion for Commercial Shipping
Lloyd’s Register, A.P. Moller–Maersk (Maersk), the South Carolina Ports Authority (Port of Charleston), and the Port of Felixstowe have initiated a joint feasibility study to assess the technical, regulatory, and operational frameworks required for a nuclear-powered container service linking the United Kingdom and the United States.
The study will focus on a notional 15,000 TEU nuclear-powered container vessel, evaluating critical aspects such as reactor safety, fuel lifecycle management, crew training, port infrastructure readiness, and compliance with international maritime and nuclear non-proliferation standards. Stakeholders will also examine emergency response protocols, waste disposal strategies, and the economic viability of integrating small modular reactors (SMRs) into commercial shipping operations.
Key Objectives of the Study
- Safety and Security: Establish robust safeguards for onboard nuclear systems, including containment, shielding, and fail-safe mechanisms to mitigate risks of radiation exposure or accidental release.
- Regulatory Alignment: Engage with flag states, classification societies, and international bodies such as the IMO and IAEA to harmonize standards for nuclear-powered merchant vessels.
- Port Readiness: Assess modifications required at terminals to accommodate nuclear-fueled ships, including specialized berthing, refueling infrastructure, and waste handling facilities.
- Operational Efficiency: Analyze potential reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs compared to conventional heavy fuel oil or LNG-powered vessels, alongside implications for voyage scheduling and maintenance intervals.
- Crew Competency: Develop training programs to ensure seafarers possess the expertise to operate and maintain nuclear propulsion systems, including crisis management for radiological incidents.
The outcomes of this study will inform industry discussions on the role of nuclear energy in achieving decarbonization targets for deep-sea shipping. While no commercial deployment timeline has been confirmed, the initiative reflects growing interest in alternative propulsion technologies amid tightening environmental regulations and energy transition pressures.
