Fugro Enhances Survey Fleet Resilience Against GPS Interference Amid Geopolitical Challenges

Fugro Strengthens Survey Fleet Defenses Against GPS Disruption Following Geopolitical Revenue Impact

Dutch marine geoscience and survey specialist Fugro has announced measures to bolster its offshore survey fleet’s resistance to GPS jamming, following a €25 million ($28 million) earnings shortfall attributed to geopolitical tensions—including a €10 million hit in Q3 alone.

The company’s third-quarter financial update highlights operational disruptions linked to regional conflicts, particularly in the Middle East, where GPS interference and vessel movement restrictions have intensified. Fugro’s survey operations, critical for offshore energy projects and maritime infrastructure, now face heightened risks of signal degradation and navigational inaccuracies.

Strategic Fleet Upgrades to Mitigate Risks

In response, Fugro is implementing advanced countermeasures across its survey fleet, including:

  • Enhanced GPS redundancy systems to ensure uninterrupted positioning data in high-risk zones.
  • Hybrid navigation solutions integrating inertial measurement units (IMUs) and terrestrial reference networks for fail-safe operations.
  • Proactive route optimization to minimize exposure to known jamming hotspots, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz and Persian Gulf.
  • Collaborative threat intelligence sharing with industry peers and maritime security agencies to preempt disruptions.

While Fugro’s broader revenue streams—including subsea construction and asset integrity services—remain resilient, the survey division’s challenges underscore the growing vulnerability of precision-dependent maritime operations in conflict-prone waters. The company’s proactive adjustments reflect a broader industry trend toward hardening critical survey capabilities against evolving geopolitical and technological threats.
