India Unveils Strategic Initiative to Expand Domestic Container Manufacturing Capacity

India Approves ₹100 Billion ($1.05B) Plan to Scale Container Production

In a significant move to bolster maritime logistics and reduce reliance on imports, the Indian government has approved a ₹100 billion ($1.05 billion) production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. The initiative targets a tenfold increase in domestic shipping container manufacturing capacity, aiming to reach an annual output of 750,000 TEUs by 2030.

The scheme is designed to incentivize private sector participation, fostering technological upgrades and efficiency improvements in container production facilities. Key focus areas include enhancing quality standards, adopting sustainable manufacturing practices, and integrating advanced materials to meet global shipping requirements.

Key Objectives of the Initiative

  • Reduction in import dependency: Currently, India imports over 90% of its shipping containers, creating vulnerabilities in supply chain resilience.
  • Cost efficiency: Local production will lower logistics costs for domestic and export-oriented cargo movements.
  • Job creation: The expansion is expected to generate over 50,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities in manufacturing, logistics, and associated sectors.
  • Strategic autonomy: Aligns with India’s broader push for self-reliance in critical infrastructure sectors.

Industry stakeholders anticipate that the scheme will attract significant foreign direct investment (FDI), particularly from container manufacturers with expertise in high-capacity, reefers, and specialized cargo units. The government has also outlined plans to develop dedicated manufacturing zones near major ports to streamline supply chain operations.

Maritime analysts note that this initiative complements India’s ongoing efforts to modernize port infrastructure and expand container handling capacity, positioning the country as a key player in global trade logistics.
