Japan Confirms High Concentration of Heavy Rare Earth Elements in Deep-Sea Mud Near Minamitorishima

Significant Discovery in Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced on Friday that laboratory analysis of deep-sea mud samples collected earlier this year near Minamitorishima Island has revealed a notably high concentration of medium and heavy rare earth elements.

The samples, retrieved from the seabed within Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), show that medium and heavy rare earth elements constitute approximately 54% of the total rare earth content. This composition is particularly valuable due to the critical role these elements play in advanced technologies, including electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, and defense systems.

Strategic Implications for Japan’s Resource Security

The discovery holds significant strategic importance for Japan, which currently relies heavily on imports for nearly all its rare earth supplies. The presence of high-grade rare earth mud within its EEZ could reduce dependency on foreign sources and strengthen domestic supply chains.

METI officials indicated that further exploration and feasibility studies will be conducted to assess the economic viability of deep-sea mining operations. Environmental impact assessments will also be prioritized to ensure sustainable extraction practices.

Seafarers and maritime professionals should note that deep-sea mining operations present unique technical challenges, including:

  • High-pressure environments at depths exceeding 5,000 meters
  • Complex logistics for seabed-to-surface material transport
  • Specialized vessel requirements for mining and processing
