MHI Strengthens Shipbuilding Footprint with Major Yamaguchi Investment
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has formalized a landmark agreement with Shimonoseki City, securing prime industrial land on Choshu Dejima—a purpose-built island in Japan’s Yamaguchi Prefecture—to drive a substantial expansion of its shipbuilding capabilities.
The initiative, backed by a $660 million investment, underscores MHI’s commitment to reinforcing its position as a global leader in maritime engineering. The expansion will enhance production capacity, optimize supply chain logistics, and support the development of next-generation vessel designs, including advanced LNG carriers, bulkers, and offshore platforms.
Key Strategic Objectives
- Infrastructure Development: Construction of new shipbuilding berths, dry docks, and fabrication facilities to accommodate larger and more complex vessels.
- Workforce & Innovation: Expansion of technical training programs and R&D collaboration with Japanese universities to foster expertise in digital shipbuilding and sustainable propulsion technologies.
- Regional Economic Impact: Creation of high-skilled jobs and long-term partnerships with local suppliers, aligning with Japan’s broader industrial revitalization goals.
The project aligns with MHI’s long-term vision to meet surging global demand for energy-efficient and environmentally compliant ships, while mitigating supply chain bottlenecks in Asia’s shipbuilding hubs.
