RINA to Oversee Safety Compliance for Indonesia’s Flagship Hydrogen Initiative
Italian classification society RINA has been appointed to conduct comprehensive safety assessments for the H2WATT Green Hydrogen Hub, a strategic project led by PLN Puslitbang, Indonesia’s state-owned research and development arm of Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN).
The H2WATT initiative, positioned as a cornerstone of Indonesia’s energy transition, aims to establish a scalable green hydrogen production and distribution infrastructure. RINA’s engagement underscores the project’s emphasis on operational integrity and risk mitigation in hydrogen handling—a critical factor in large-scale renewable energy adoption.
Scope of Work
Under the contract, RINA will deliver:
- Hazard identification and risk analysis for hydrogen production, storage, and transfer systems;
- Compliance verification against international maritime and industrial safety standards;
- Technical due diligence for onshore and near-shore facilities;
- Emergency response planning and safety case development.
The assessment will address the unique challenges of hydrogen’s high flammability and low ignition energy, ensuring that safety protocols align with global best practices while accommodating local regulatory frameworks.
Strategic Implications
The H2WATT hub is expected to serve as a blueprint for Indonesia’s broader decarbonization efforts, with potential applications in maritime fueling, industrial feedstock, and grid stabilization. RINA’s involvement signals growing confidence in the project’s technical viability and its role in positioning Indonesia as a regional leader in green hydrogen exports.
For seafarers and maritime stakeholders, the project’s progress may influence future bunkering infrastructure and vessel propulsion technologies, particularly as the industry accelerates its shift toward zero-emission fuels.
