Strategic Collaboration to Propel Bio-LNG Adoption in Global Shipping

Singapore Leads Initiative to Accelerate Bio-LNG Integration in Maritime Sector

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), in partnership with CMA CGM Group and Singapore LNG Corporation (SLNG), has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance the adoption of liquefied bio-methane (bio-LNG) as a sustainable marine fuel. This collaboration underscores a commitment to decarbonizing the shipping industry while leveraging Singapore’s strategic position as a global maritime hub.

Key Objectives of the Partnership

  • Supply Chain Development: Establish a robust framework for the production, distribution, and bunkering of bio-LNG in Singapore, ensuring compliance with international maritime regulations and environmental standards.
  • Technical Feasibility: Conduct joint assessments to evaluate the integration of bio-LNG into existing LNG infrastructure, including compatibility with dual-fuel engines and storage solutions.
  • Industry Collaboration: Foster partnerships with biofuel producers, energy providers, and shipowners to create scalable solutions for bio-LNG adoption across the fleet.
  • Regulatory Alignment: Work closely with policymakers to streamline certification processes and incentivize the use of bio-LNG as a drop-in or blended fuel in compliance with IMO 2030 and 2050 emissions targets.

Why Bio-LNG Matters for Seafarers and Operators

Bio-LNG presents a near-term solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, offering up to 90% lower CO₂ emissions compared to conventional marine fuels when derived from sustainable biomass sources. For seafarers, this transition may involve:

  • Training updates to handle bio-LNG bunkering and safety protocols.
  • Adaptation to dual-fuel engine operations, ensuring seamless transitions between LNG and bio-LNG.
  • Enhanced onboard monitoring systems to verify fuel quality and emissions compliance.

The MoU builds on Singapore’s existing LNG infrastructure, positioning the port as a testbed for bio-LNG innovation. Stakeholders anticipate pilot projects within the next 12–18 months, with potential expansion to regional hubs in Southeast Asia and beyond.
