Critical Incident in Strait of Hormuz: LNG Carrier in Fire Hazard, Crude Tanker Damaged

Vessels Targeted in High-Risk Maritime Corridor

Professional seafarers are advised of a severe security incident in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global energy shipments.

Incident Overview

On Tuesday, maritime security sources confirmed that two commercial vessels sustained damage following reported missile strikes in the strategic waterway during overnight operations.

  • A Qatari-flagged LNG carrier, Al Rekayyat, fully laden with liquefied natural gas, is currently assessed as being at high risk of catastrophic explosion due to structural compromise and potential cargo containment failure.
  • A Saudi-flagged crude oil tanker incurred hull damage, though no immediate environmental release has been reported at this stage.

Operational Implications

Seafarers transiting the region are urged to:

  • Immediately escalate to Master and Company Security Officer (CSO) if operating within 100 nautical miles of the incident coordinates.
  • Review and implement Ship Security Plan (SSP) measures, including heightened vigilance, restricted access to critical spaces, and preparation of emergency response protocols.
  • Monitor VHF Channel 16 and designated naval broadcast frequencies for real-time security advisories.
  • Ensure all crew are briefed on emergency muster procedures and fire-fighting readiness, with particular emphasis on LNG-specific hazards.

Industry Response

Flag State authorities, P&I clubs, and industry coalitions are coordinating a unified response. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been notified and is liaising with regional naval forces to secure the transit corridor. Seafarers are reminded that the Strait of Hormuz remains a designated High-Risk Area (HRA) under BMP5 guidelines.

Further updates will be disseminated via official maritime security channels. Masters are advised to log all incidents in the Ship’s Log and submit detailed reports to their respective Flag State and insurers without delay.
