Hands-On Training Voyage Shapes Future Maritime Professionals
A cohort of 20 marine science cadets from Curtin University recently completed a transformative sea voyage from Perth to Hobart, providing them with critical exposure to real-world maritime operations and career pathways.
The voyage formed part of the Collaborative Australian Postgraduate Sea Training Alliance Network (CAPSTAN), a national initiative led by CSIRO to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practice for emerging maritime professionals.
Key Voyage Objectives and Outcomes

CAPSTAN selects high-potential cadets from universities nationwide through a competitive application process. The program emphasises interdisciplinary learning, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application in a live maritime environment.
This year’s voyage aboard the RV Investigator provided cadets with access to advanced marine research facilities, reinforcing the importance of field experience in shaping competent maritime professionals.
The initiative underscores the growing demand for skilled seafarers and marine scientists, highlighting the value of structured training programs in preparing the next generation of industry leaders.
