DEME Secures Major Offshore Wind Installation Project in Dutch Waters
Marine engineering specialist DEME has been contracted to handle the transportation and installation of foundations for the initial phase of the Zeevonk offshore wind farm, located in the Dutch sector of the North Sea.
The contract covers the deployment of monopile foundations and transition pieces for the project, which represents a significant milestone in the Netherlands’ renewable energy expansion. Zeevonk I is jointly developed by Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners through its Energy Transition Fund I.
Scope of Work and Technical Challenges
DEME’s scope includes the precise installation of foundations in challenging North Sea conditions, requiring advanced dynamic positioning and heavy-lift capabilities. The company will deploy its fleet of specialized vessels, including the Orion, a next-generation offshore installation vessel equipped with a 5,000-tonne crane.
Logistical coordination will be critical, as the project involves transporting large-scale components from fabrication yards to the offshore site while maintaining strict safety and environmental protocols.
Project Timeline and Industry Impact
Preparatory works are expected to commence in the coming months, with offshore installation operations scheduled to begin in 2025. Once fully operational, Zeevonk I will contribute approximately 1.4 GW of clean energy to the Dutch grid, supporting the country’s ambitious offshore wind targets.
