Norway’s First Ammonia Bunkering Trial Set for Equinor-Chartered PSV
Azane Fuel Solutions has secured regulatory clearance from Norway’s Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) to execute a test bunkering operation of up to 73 tonnes of ammonia aboard the Viking Energy—a platform supply vessel (PSV) chartered by Equinor. This approval represents a critical step in the vessel’s transition to ammonia-powered propulsion, aligning with Norway’s push for zero-emission maritime operations.
Key Operational Milestone
The trial, conducted in collaboration with Equinor and other industry stakeholders, will assess bunkering procedures, safety protocols, and infrastructure compatibility for ammonia as a marine fuel. Successful execution could pave the way for broader adoption of ammonia in offshore and deep-sea operations, reducing reliance on conventional marine fuels.
Industry and Regulatory Alignment
Norway’s proactive stance on alternative fuels—coupled with Equinor’s commitment to decarbonization—positions the Viking Energy as a testbed for ammonia logistics in the North Sea. The DSB’s approval underscores growing confidence in ammonia’s viability as a scalable, low-carbon marine fuel, provided operational and safety challenges are addressed.
