Strategic Passage Confirmed by Taipei
The People’s Republic of China’s latest capital ship, the Type 003 aircraft carrier Fujian, completed a transit of the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, according to a statement issued by Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense.
The passage marks the first carrier deployment in the contested waterway since April and underscores Beijing’s routine assertion of navigational rights in international waters.
Operational Context
Defense analysts note that the transit aligns with standard People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) operational patterns, demonstrating platform readiness and regional presence. The Fujian, commissioned in June 2022, represents the PLAN’s third carrier and the first to feature an electromagnetic catapult launch system, significantly enhancing sortie generation rates.
Regional Monitoring
Taiwanese maritime patrol assets maintained continuous surveillance throughout the transit, while U.S. Indo-Pacific Command acknowledged the movement as consistent with international law. No deviations from established transit corridors were reported.
Beijing maintains that Taiwan remains an integral part of Chinese territory, a position consistently opposed by Taipei and its international partners.
