Registering a Boat and Yacht under the Polish Flag: A Resident’s Experience
Owning a motor yacht in Spain is a dream for many maritime professionals. However, navigating the strict Spanish maritime regulations and inspection regimes has led many boat owners to seek alternative registrations. Registering a vessel under the Polish flag (PZMiW) has become incredibly popular among expats in Spain. This article explores the process, benefits, and hidden tax implications.
Why the Polish Flag?
The primary advantage of the Polish flag is deregulation for recreational vessels under 24 meters:
- No Expiration: The registration certificate is valid for the lifetime of the boat. There are no mandatory renewals every five years as required by the Spanish flag.
- No Technical Inspections: Poland does not require periodic safety and technical inspections (ITB) for private recreational yachts, saving owners significant time and survey fees.
- Fast Processing: Registration can usually be completed entirely online through authorized agents within a few weeks.

The Registration Process and Certification
To register your boat, you will need the original Bill of Sale, the CE conformity declaration (or builder’s certificate), and photos of the Hull Identification Number (HIN) and engine plates. Once submitted, you receive a provisional certificate, followed by the permanent plastic registration card.
Mooring and Hidden Spanish Taxes
While the Polish flag exempts you from Spanish technical inspections, it does not exempt you from Spanish taxes if you are a tax resident in Spain.
If you reside in Spain and bring a boat into Spanish waters, you must be aware of the Impuesto Especial sobre Determinados Medios de Transporte (IEDMT), commonly known as the Matriculation Tax. This tax is 12% of the vessel’s value. Boats under 8 meters are generally exempt, but you must still file Modelo 06 with Hacienda to claim the exemption.
Additionally, when securing a mooring (amarre) in popular marinas like Torrevieja or Alicante, the marina management will require your Polish registration, valid third-party liability insurance (which costs roughly €200-€400 annually for an average motorboat), and proof of your identity.
