Strategic Partnership Aims to Drive Industry-Wide Transition
RINA, the global classification society and maritime technical authority, has entered into two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Thailand’s state-owned energy giant, PTT Public Company Limited (PTT). The collaboration focuses on pioneering low-carbon fuels, vessel electrification, hydrogen integration, and carbon management—key enablers for decarbonizing the maritime, energy, and industrial sectors.
The agreements reflect a shared commitment to accelerating the adoption of sustainable propulsion technologies, alternative fuels, and carbon-neutral solutions in line with global decarbonization targets. By leveraging RINA’s technical expertise in maritime innovation and PTT’s leadership in energy transition, the partnership seeks to bridge gaps between policy, technology, and operational feasibility.
Key Focus Areas
- Low-Carbon Fuels: Development and certification of next-generation marine fuels, including ammonia, methanol, and biofuels, ensuring compliance with IMO 2030/2050 emissions standards.
- Vessel Electrification: Feasibility studies and technical assessments for hybrid and fully electric propulsion systems, addressing power generation, storage, and infrastructure challenges.
- Hydrogen and Ammonia: Joint research into hydrogen-based energy systems, including bunkering solutions, safety protocols, and regulatory frameworks for maritime applications.
- Carbon Management: Integration of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies in maritime operations, alongside lifecycle emissions tracking and verification.
The collaboration also emphasizes regulatory alignment, workforce training, and digital tools to support seafarers and operators in transitioning to cleaner technologies. With PTT’s extensive experience in refining and energy supply chains and RINA’s deep technical authority, the partnership positions both entities as catalysts for scalable, industry-wide decarbonization.
