Sanmar and SAAM Towage Unveil Two Next-Generation Tugs for Americas Fleet

Collaboration Yields Tier III-Compliant Vessels

Sanmar Shipyards has handed over two state-of-the-art tugboats to SAAM Towage, reinforcing a decades-long partnership and expanding the operator’s capabilities across the Americas. As the region’s largest towage provider, SAAM Towage continues to modernise its fleet with vessels engineered for efficiency, environmental compliance, and operational resilience.

The newly delivered tugs meet IMO Tier III emissions standards, integrating advanced propulsion systems and exhaust after-treatment technology to minimise nitrogen oxide output. Designed for versatility, the vessels support harbour, coastal, and terminal operations, offering enhanced bollard pull and manoeuvrability in congested or high-traffic zones.

Key Features and Operational Advantages

  • Tier III Compliance: Reduced emissions align with global regulatory trends and port sustainability initiatives.
  • Optimised Performance: High bollard pull ratings and azimuth thrusters ensure precise control in confined spaces.
  • Crew-Centric Design: Ergonomic bridge layouts, noise-dampening measures, and automated systems improve safety and reduce fatigue during extended deployments.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Hybrid-ready architecture and intelligent power management systems lower operational costs without compromising response times.

The delivery follows a series of successful projects between Sanmar and SAAM Towage, reflecting both companies’ commitment to innovation in maritime infrastructure. The tugs will enter service in strategic ports, supporting vessel escort, berthing, and emergency response operations.

Industry analysts note that the introduction of Tier III-compliant tonnage positions SAAM Towage as a leader in sustainable towage solutions, while Sanmar’s shipbuilding expertise underscores its role as a preferred partner for complex, high-specification projects.
